A gentleman buying a gold or silver pocket watch would often receive one of these as part of the purchase, or commission one separately to house a significant watch at home. The veneer is burl, almost certainly thuya imported from North Africa, with the dense reddish speckled figure that made thuya the preferred burl for quality French boxes of this period. The lid and front panels are framed in hand-cut brass stringing, and a blank brass cartouche at the center of the lid was left plain intentionally, so the original recipient could have it engraved with a monogram. It never was, which means the next owner can still do so, or leave it as is. The interior is lined in original silk velvet in a saturated electric blue, a color used almost exclusively in French presentation boxes from the 1860s through the 1880s. The weight tells you immediately this is cast metal rather than stamped brass. The original glass, easel support, and hanging ring are all intact, so it shows equally well standing on a mantel or hung on a wall. Trays like this are known as salvers in the antique trade, meaning a footed serving tray meant to be set down on a table rather than carried. The piece has the warm tone that only develops when silver plate wears down to expose the copper underneath, a quality collectors look for and pay extra for. The beaded edge catches the light at every point along the rim. I bought this one in England earlier this year, and while it carries no hallmarks, the construction and styling place it firmly in the early twentieth century.

[d]Type | Footed Tray

[d]Material | Silver plate on copper

[d]Origin | United Kingdom

[d]Age | Circa 1900 to 1920

[d]Style | Edwardian

[d]Size | 1.25 in W x 12 in diameter

[d]Feet | Four cast shell and scroll feet, original

[d]Rim | Beaded edge

[d]Markings | No visible hallmarks

[condition]

The tray is in good honest antique condition with wear consistent with roughly a century of use.
