Both drawers slide and function. The brass shield escutcheons on the case and lid both show wear to the gilt finish. The swan-neck carry handle on top is present and secure. This form descends directly from the Adam-style silverwork of the late 18th century and was produced continuously in electroplate through the Victorian and Edwardian periods. The cobalt blue liner is not decorative — it is the practical solution to a real problem: salt corrodes silver, so the glass protected the metal while the pierced body let the blue show through. The result is one of those pieces that is more visually striking than its modest origins might suggest.

[d]Type | Open salt cellar

[d]Material | Electroplated silverplate with cobalt blue glass liner

[d]Origin | England

[d]Age | Circa 1880 to 1910, Victorian to Edwardian period

[d]Style | Neoclassical Revival

[d]Size | 3.25 in H x 6.25 in W x 2.5 in D

[d]Marks | B13 (pattern or batch number); no maker's cartouche or EPNS stamp present

[d]Liner | Cobalt blue glass, oval, removable, intact

[condition]

Good antique condition overall. The technique is engraving with hand-applied watercolour — the grey tonal shadow work in the skirts and cloaks reads as intaglio printing, with colour finished by hand over the top. Neither is a chromolithograph or mechanical reproduction. Both are housed in matching ebonized frames with gilt bead inner edges and yellow watered silk mats. The verso label cites four primary sources: portraits of Elizabeth Woodville, Queen of Edward IV; a description of the dress of Anne, Queen of Richard III, on the day before her coronation; Illuminated Royal Manuscript 16 F. 2; and the effigy of Lady Peyton in Isleham Church, Cambridgeshire.

The Gold Gown documents Jacobean court dress of approximately 1610 to 1630, the reign of James I and the opening years of Charles I. The entire body wall is press-pierced in a repeating quatrefoil-and-star trellis, gadroon borders frame the serpentine rim and base rail, and four cast rococo scroll bracket feet — each with acanthus leaf and foliate piercings — give it considerably more presence than the typical plain-footed examples. An applied Rococo cartouche on each long face was intended to hold a crest or name label, the sort of small detail that distinguishes a piece made for a proper household from one made strictly for the trade. The liner is missing, as it almost always is on these. Silverplate loss is present throughout and significant in areas: the base shows heavy loss exposing the copper, the oval reserves within both cartouche frames have lost all plate and read as warm copper, and the interior shows patchy plate loss across the floor and lower walls. The outer body walls retain more of the original plate, giving the piece an attractive two-tone copper and silver appearance overall that reads as genuine aged patina rather than damage. Five figures in Cavalier dress gather at a flower-strewn table: a standing man in red raises a toast, a bearded companion in blue returns it from across the table, a woman in yellow holds her glass at center, a man in a patchwork doublet leans toward her from the right, and a young page in blue kneels at the left with cards in hand. The palette is warm and saturated, the composition well-balanced, and the panel carries a penciled inscription on the verso that reads approximately "J. Warnael" followed by a second element, neither of which has been matched to a documented artist in available records. The piece has been trimmed at the left edge at some point in its history, suggesting the original composition extended further in that direction.

[d]Artist | Unknown Artist, Continental European School

[d]Medium | Oil on panel

[d]Subject | Merry company toast scene, five figures in 17th-century Cavalier dress at a flower-strewn table with wine and playing cards

[d]Artwork Size | 9.75 in H x 14 in W

[d]Framed Size | Unframed

[d]Origin | Continental Europe (Belgium, France, or Netherlands)

[d]Age | 19th century, circa 1850 to 1890

[d]Style | 19th-century revival of Dutch and Flemish Golden Age merry company painting

[d]Signature | Unsigned; penciled inscription verso reads approximately "J. The paint surface carries an overall layer of surface grime that mutes the palette somewhat, particularly in the darker background passages, and a careful cleaning by a conservator would likely improve color saturation and surface clarity. There is a notable area of paint disruption in the upper left corner of the painting surface, visible as a lighter, disturbed passage in the dark brown background, which should be examined by a conservator before any treatment decisions are made. No active flaking or lifting was observed across the remainder of the surface. The edges and corners of the panel show age-appropriate wear and minor chipping consistent with handling over many decades. The left edge of the composition has been trimmed at some point in its history, cropping what was likely a wider original scene. The piece is offered unframed and as found.

A flat relief casting of an English setter on point, the figure cut out in silhouette with detailed coat, feathering, and ground texture worked into the front face.
