antique-dutch-mahogany-jardiniere-stand-c1800
Antique Dutch Mahogany Plant Stand with Brass Liner

This is a small Dutch neoclassical stand, built around a deep, removable brass liner and raised on slender fluted legs. It began life as a tea stove: the brass well held a covered pot kept warm over smoldering peat through a long Dutch afternoon, with the little apron drawer below for the strainer, spoons, and caddy key. The watertight liner is why it reads so naturally as a planter now, a second life for a piece made for the ritual of keeping tea hot at your elbow.

[d]Dimensions | 20 in H x 11.5 in W x 11.5 in D
[d]Period | Antique
[d]Date | Circa 1800
[d]Style | Louis XVI / Dutch Neoclassical
[d]Also Known As | jardinière on stand, theestoof, bottle stand, cellarette
[d]Country of Origin | Netherlands
[d]Primary Wood | Mahogany, flame figured
[d]Finish | Original surface, cleaned and waxed
[d]Secondary Wood | Oak (drawer)
[d]Construction | Hand-cut dovetail drawer, hand-pegged joinery, solid and veneered mahogany over oak
[d]Hardware | Cast brass rosette ring pulls, brass toupie feet, removable brass liner
[d]Drawer | Single working drawer in apron
[d]Liner | Removable brass liner, original

Condition block

[condition] Sold as-is, in good honest antique condition for its age, with the photos governing. The flame mahogany retains a warm original surface that has been cleaned and waxed rather than stripped or refinished. There is an old vertical shrinkage split to one case side, stable and consistent with age, visible in the photos. Expect minor veneer losses and lifting at the top rim and around the drawer surround, and light chipping to veneer edges at the canted corners. The drawer runs on its original hand-cut dovetailed joints and opens and closes freely. The removable brass liner shows genuine age: oxidation, spotting, verdigris to the interior base, and a soft overall patina, with old soldered seams intact and two small ring lifts present. The brass rosette pulls and brass feet are consistent with the piece; I have not disturbed them to confirm they are first to it, so I am describing them as period-appropriate rather than documented original. One rear leg-to-case joint shows an old repair or reinforcement, visible in the joinery closeup. Overall a structurally sound, usable piece that shows its age in the ways a 220-year-old object should.

#105

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0896/4623/5926/files/Belgium_France_Inventory_Continued-7574.jpg?v=1785171435
