The body is turned solid oak with strong quarter-sawn medullary ray figure visible inside the bowl, raised on a turned ebonized pedestal foot. The silver plate mounts are marked EPNS on the rim band. The shield cartouche on the front is hand-engraved with a flowing script monogram, AB. Bowls of this form served as Edwardian domestic fruit and salad bowls and as presentation pieces for sporting clubs and societies, where the shield was engraved with the recipient's name or initials.

[d]Type | Pedestal Bowl

[d]Material | Solid oak with electroplated nickel silver mounts and ebonized turned foot

[d]Hallmark | EPNS stamp on the rim band, no maker's mark

[d]Engraving | Script monogram AB on the shield cartouche

[d]Origin | England

[d]Age | Circa 1900 to 1915, Edwardian period

[d]Style | Edwardian English, sporting and presentation tradition

[d]Size | 6 in H x 12.5 in W x 9.5 in D, interior well 8.25 in diameter x 3.75 in deep

[d]Construction | Turned solid oak body and separately turned ebonized foot, joined by a central through bolt

[condition]

The bowl is in good antique condition with honest age appropriate wear. The oak body retains a deep warm patina, and the quarter-sawn figure on the interior is striking. There is one vertical hairline shrinkage split in the oak running from just below the silver plate rim down into the interior wall. The split does not pass all the way through the wood, the bowl is structurally stable, and the form holds true. The silver plate rim, handles, and shield cartouche are intact, securely fixed with their original brass capped screws and rivets. The EPNS surfaces show light wear and minor tarnish consistent with age and gentle use, with no significant losses to the plating. The ebonized pedestal foot is intact with light surface wear. The original engraved AB monogram on the cartouche is clean and well preserved. No ceramic liner is present, and the construction shows no evidence that one was ever fitted.
