It was made as a table centerpiece, meant to hold a plant or cut flowers in its removable metal liner so water never touched the wood. The serpentine bombé shape and the mix of straight-grained banding against burl panels is what gives it presence at this small scale. The kingwood and burl veneers are largely intact and hold a warm color, but there is shrinkage typical of a piece this age: fine cracking and a few small lifting areas in the veneer, most visible on the curved panels, along with some minor loss to the boxwood stringing. The gilt brass gallery, corner mounts, and drop handles are all present and secure, with softened, worn gilding and darkened high points from age. The brass bead trim at the top and base is intact. The ebonized base shows scuffing and edge wear, and the underside shows old scratches, some filler, and pegged construction consistent with the period. The removable metal liner is heavily oxidized with green and grey surface corrosion throughout and has an old repair to the bottom. The liner leaks and is not water tight. Do not add water directly to it. To use the piece with live plants or flowers, set a separate waterproof container or a nursery pot inside the liner.
