antique-georgian-style-brass-and-wood-slatted-planter
Antique Edwardian Brass and Wood Slatted Planter

The slats here are doing nothing structural. The brass liner holds everything, and the open wooden cage exists so the brass shows through it and catches the light. This shape began as a peat bucket, the vessel that carried fuel from the store to the drawing room fire, before someone reworked it into a parlour piece on a turned base. The openwork version is one I had not run into before.

[d]Dimensions | 15 in. Dia. x 17.5 in. A faint script inscription to the underside base plate is not legible.

[d]Construction or Technique | Slats individually cut and seated into rebates in the turned rim and base rings, bound at the waist with glue and fibre. Three applied turned ball feet. Fine light stringing lines inlaid to the rim and base mouldings. The brass liner is hand-seamed with a vertical soldered join and a separately applied base disc.

[d]Secondary Material | Brass

[d]Hardware or Mounts | Brass swing handle on two brass mounting plates

[d]Liner | Removable brass, drilled at the base for drainage

[condition]

One of the slats in the lower cage is missing, leaving an open gap in the rhythm of the cage that is visible from that side. The slats are the whole visual point of this form, so I want to be plain about it rather than photograph around it.

The turned base carries four to five shrinkage cracks running vertically through the moulded rings, and at least one of those runs the full depth of the socle. The base plate on the underside is split across its width. This is timber shrinkage in solid turned wood rather than impact damage, and it is what happens to a piece like this over a century, but the cracks are open rather than hairline and there are several of them.

The brass liner has a vertical seam running the full height of the interior wall with an old solder repair along it, and the applied base disc is drilled through with corrosion and old solder around the opening. The interior floor is scratched and mottled from use. The exterior of the liner is bright.

Along the rim rebate there is old glue residue where the slat ends seat, and there are screw holes through the rim. Some slats sit very slightly proud of their neighbours. The fibre binding at the waist inside the cage is frayed along its edges.

The wood shows the marks you would expect from long domestic use: small dents, scattered surface scratches, and darkening in the recesses of the turnings.

Please review all photographs closely, as they form part of this description.

#152

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0896/4623/5926/files/Belgium_FranceContainerInventory-9786.jpg?v=1787946054
https://austyn-marie-design.myshopify.com/products/antique-georgian-style-brass-and-wood-slatted-planter
