antique-spanish-school-oil-the-crown-18th-century
Antique European Crown and Cannon Oil Painting, Unframed

A gilt crown sits on a stone ledge beside a cannon muzzle and a laced steel leg guard, all of it pulled out of a dark ground by a single light. The raised gilding on the crown is the best-preserved passage on the canvas. The composition is cut close at both sides, and I wonder if it began as the still-life corner of a larger picture, though nothing on the work confirms that. Unsigned and unidentified, it is offered as an anonymous still life in the Baroque tradition.

[d]Artist | Unidentified

[d]Signature | Unsigned, as is common for still life studies of this period

[d]Medium | Oil on canvas

[d]Subject | A closed gilt crown with orb and cross, set with dark stones, resting on a stone ledge beside a cannon muzzle and cannonball, with steel armor laced with gilt straps and a length of plum drapery at the left edge

[d]Origin | Spain, likely

[d]Age | Antique, 17th to 18th century, assessed on paint handling and surface character. Baroque painters of the 17th century made still lifes of arms, armor, and regalia as emblems of power, often set against a deep dark ground with one strong source of light. The method is called tenebrism, and it is why the gilding on the crown seems to glow while the armor and ledge sink into shadow.

[d]Support | Canvas, relined per the previous seller, tacked to a later wooden stretcher with a coarse woven backing cloth across the reverse

[condition]

Antique condition consistent with age and previous restoration. It is fitted with two D-ring hangers and picture wire, with felt bumpers at the lower corners. The stretcher is not original to the work, and the relining has likely removed any labels or marks that once appeared on the original reverse.

Please review all photographs closely, as they form part of this description.
