Each piece carries a portrait of Shakespeare in an arched niche above his dates, 1564 to 1616, the figure posed with his hands resting on a cushion after the funerary monument in Holy Trinity Church, Stratford-upon-Avon, where he is buried. That monument was installed within a few years of his death and is one of only two likenesses generally accepted as authentic. A small shield, probably the Shakespeare arms granted to his father in 1596, sits above each portrait. The corkscrew and bottle opener are fitted with steel working parts, and the nutcracker grips with ribbed brass jaws. Each tool is stamped CBF England, and the underside of the stand is cast England and Rd No 813524, a British registered design number from 1936. Sets of this kind were sold as souvenirs of Stratford-upon-Avon and found a place on sideboards and in bars across Britain.
