Artist Bio:

Johann Jakob Frey, a Swiss engraver born in Lucerne in 1681, honed his craft in Rome under the tutelage of Arnold van Westerhout and Carlo Maratti. His skills quickly made him one of the most talented artists in Rome, admired for his precise drawing, tasteful composition, and mastery of light and shadow. His etchings exude a sense of energy and are executed with a steady and skilled hand. Few artists have been able to capture the style of the painters they chose to engrave as effectively as Frey. He passed away at the age of seventy in Rome, leaving behind a legacy of exceptional engravings. Among his works is an engraving of "The Triumph of David," based on a painting by Domenichino, depicting the biblical story of David's victorious entry into Jerusalem after defeating the Philistine giant Goliath.

Presented in an oak frame with a gilt-effect slip. First published c.1710, however this impression is on wove which dates it to the latter half of the 18th century. There is an impression in reverse in the British Museum.
