Published in 1894 by Houghton, Mifflin and Company (Boston and New York) and printed at The Riverside Press, Cambridge, this charming “Cabinet Edition” of Enoch Arden and Other Poems is a compact, display-worthy slice of Victorian literary history. Alfred Lord Tennyson was Britain’s Poet Laureate and one of the most influential voices of the 19th century, and Enoch Arden is his best-known narrative poem, written for an audience that loved moral storytelling, seafaring drama, and emotional restraint. The plot reads like a Victorian gut punch: a faithful husband disappears at sea, returns years later, and faces the impossible choice between love and doing what is “right,” a theme that hit hard in an era obsessed with duty, reputation, and the quiet sacrifices of domestic life.
The binding is intact and the text block is fully readable, making this a functional as well as decorative copy. The leather and boards show light rubbing and scuffing consistent with 130 years of age, with edge and corner wear throughout. The interior is generally clean with expected age toning to the pages.
