Antique Bronzed Spelter Racehorse and Jockey Statue on Marble Base
Antique Bronzed Spelter Racehorse and Jockey Statue on Marble Base

A jockey sits up on a racehorse, whip in one hand and the reins in the other, cast in spelter with a bronzed finish and mounted on a marble plinth. It's a mantel or desk piece for someone who followed the racing calendar. My favorite part is the jockey's face, which is modeled with real attention to the set of the jaw.
The bronze-toned finish has worn and flaked in patches, most visible across the horse's shoulder, flank and haunch and on the jockey's sleeve, where grey metal shows beneath. Fine scratches run across the body. The reins are a separate thin strip of metal and move freely when touched.
The marble base has been cleaned. It was cracked and has been glued back together. The break runs from beneath the front hoof to the front edge, visible on the top, the front edge and the underside, where it passes through one of the fitting recesses. There is a small chip to one corner. The figure is mounted to the marble with two fittings and has a slight wobble on the base, which does not affect its display. The underside is scuffed and stained, with light rust at both fittings and no felt.
No maker's mark or foundry stamp has been found.
