Antique Double Oil Painting House in Summer and Winter, Circa 1870
Antique Double Oil Painting House in Summer and Winter, Circa 1870

Antique paired oil paintings, one house across two seasons. The left panel shows the garden deep in snow in 1871, a fir weighed down with white, bare fruit trees against a brick wall, the house behind shuttered against the cold. The right panel is the same house and garden in summer 1870, green lawn, flower beds in bloom, a figure on the path, shutters thrown open. One painter recorded the same view twice, a year apart, and framed the two together as a record of a single place through the turning year. Oil on panel, Continental European, unsigned but dated on both panels in the artist's hand. The kind of personal topographical record that was never made for sale, only to hold onto a specific house and garden.
Both panels are stable and read well, with the paint film intact across the surfaces. The winter panel carries thick impasto in the snow that stands up off the surface as the artist laid it. The summer panel is darker in the foliage with the varnish gone amber, which deepens the greens. Both dates are clearly legible in the lower right. The panels are set into a single period frame and the reverses are not accessible without removing them, so I am describing what is visible from the front.
The frame shows its age. There is gesso loss and chipping at the outer corners, rubbing along the high points of the carved molding, and small stable cracks in the giltwood. The striped liner is worn in places. The frame presents as a genuine period surround with honest wear rather than a restored or replaced one.
