I picked this up in England, but it traveled to me by way of Brussels. The bearded man in the portrait is the Belgian painter Albert Cortvriendt, born in Brussels 21 January 1875, died there 12 June 1920, identified by a memorial inscription on the back of the canvas. Cortvriendt trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels in the late 1890s and is best known today for the Art Nouveau maison-atelier built for him in 1900 by architect Léon Sneyers on rue de Nancy, now a classified historic monument in the Marolles district. The portrait carries a second inscription on the stretcher's cross-brace, in pencil, reading "Em. Bulcke, 8 Rue Sutin, Bruxelles," identifying the painter as Émile Bulcke, Cortvriendt's close friend and fellow Academy student. Bulcke went on to a long career as a Belgian portraitist, painting sixteen portraits of the burgomasters of Ostend. Both men are listed in Paul Piron's Dictionnaire des artistes plasticiens de Belgique des XIXe et XXe siècles. A portrait of one Belgian painter by his closest painter friend, both names documented, the sitter's life dated to the day.

Condition

The painting is in good antique condition with honest age-appropriate wear. The canvas remains on its original stretcher with hand-cut keys and has not been relined. Visible craquelure across the surface is consistent with a roughly century-old oil and does not indicate structural instability. There is a small area of paint loss near the sitter's right ear, viewer's left, which would benefit from light professional inpainting if the next owner wishes to address it but is not visually disruptive at normal viewing distance. The surface shows scattered minor scuffs in the dark green ground and would benefit from a light conservation cleaning to lift accumulated surface grime and recover the depth of the original palette. No tears, no significant losses, no obvious overpainting. The signature on the lower front is illegible due to age, surface wear, and the dark ground against which it was painted. The painter's name and studio address are inscribed in pencil on the cross-brace of the stretcher.
