The view runs from a dining room through open glazed doors into a conservatory, with palms and red-flowered plants in terracotta pots and blue patterned curtains tied back on either side. A barley-twist chair and a small tasselled table sit in the foreground. The reverse is inscribed "From the dining room window, The Greaves, October 1896," and goes on to record the picture as a Christmas gift that year. The face is unsigned and I can't name the painter. The Lancaster framer's label on the back fits the date.

Assessed in its frame and under glass, so the paper surface cannot be examined directly. The image area looks bright and clean in the photographs, with no visible loss or fading of the blues. Glazing reflections limit what can be judged, and any foxing, cockling or lifting beneath the glass would not show.

The gold-toned mount has toned with age. There is light spotting across the upper area and a pale tide mark in the lower right. The mount edges are otherwise intact.

The frame shows its age. Gilt has rubbed at the corners and edges, with red bole showing through. There are small losses to the composition ornament, and the mitre has split at the lower left corner. The frame is sound and holds together.

The reverse has an old paper backing with losses and tears, and a cut-down paper patch carrying the inscription and framer's label. The cord hanger and ring are old and in place. The glass and the backing paper have not been claimed as original.

Please review all photographs closely, as they form part of this description.
