A young man in eighteenth century dress pauses with a flower in his hand, one knee braced against a woven basket that opens into a shallow vase well. Pieces like this held the paper spills used to carry a flame from the hearth to a candle, back when matches were not yet common. The unglazed bisque holds the modeling of the coat buttons and the basketwork sharply, which is the whole point of leaving it undecorated.

Construction or Technique
Slip cast in sections and assembled before firing, fired unglazed apart from the basket well

Very good antique condition. No chips or repairs. Fine firing lines are present in the recessed underside, one above the central boss and one running toward the rim beside the mark, visible only when the piece is inverted and not visible in display. Light surface soiling to the bisque, which is normal on an unglazed body that has never been sealed, and original kiln pockmarks consistent with manufacture. A small round vent hole in the underside is original to the firing rather than a later alteration. Six felt pads have been added to the base to protect surfaces; these are a later addition and not original to the piece. Please review all photographs closely, as they form part of this description.

Every antique and vintage item we carry has lived a life before arriving in your home. These are not factory-made products. They are objects with history, character, and the marks of time.

Age-appropriate wear, patina, minor imperfections, and signs of previous use or repair are inherent to antique and vintage items and are not considered defects. These characteristics are part of what makes each piece unique and are often what give it its beauty and value.

We describe the condition of each piece as accurately as possible in the listing. If you have specific questions about a piece before purchasing, please reach out. We are always happy to provide additional photos or details.

Colors may appear slightly different on screen due to monitor settings and photography lighting. We do our best to represent each item accurately.
