19th century French cast jardiniere in the Louis XVI taste, made in the musical trophy pattern. The front cartouche centers a mandolin over crossed sheet music inside a laurel wreath, with paired birds and a Pan pipes trophy at the corner mounts, and swags of oak leaves and berries draped along a pierced gallery rim. It sits on four splayed hoof feet. The piece carries a warm gilded-brass surface over a bronze body, now worn to reddish and darker tones across much of the exterior. Sold as found, without its liner and missing one handle.
This piece is sold as found with significant honest wear, and the photos are the best guide to what you are buying. One of the two scrolling handles is missing, leaving a broken mount at that end. The metal liner or insert has been removed and is not included, so the interior of the body is open and shows the raw underside of the casting. The gilded-brass surface has worn through across much of the exterior to a reddish underlayer and darker oxidation, with scattered spots of green verdigris at some of the joins. There are visible casting separations where the pierced gallery meets the body in places. The four feet and the one remaining handle are secure. Despite the losses, the cast detail across the front cartouche, birds, swags, and gallery remains crisp and the piece displays well as a decorative centerpiece.
