27.5" H x 14.5" diameter (shade or widest part of lamp)
This antique French bouillotte lamp captures the timeless elegance of neoclassical design. First created in the late 18th century to illuminate the French card game bouillotte, these lamps became a symbol of refinement in both function and style. This early 20th-century example (c.1920–1940) is crafted of gilt bronze or a heavy brass-bronze mix, giving it a substantial weight and presence. The lamp features three scrolling candelabra arms with classical acanthus details and a laurel-bordered base. Its original green tole shade is hand-painted with gold stylized floral and foliate motifs, and the adjustable arrow finial allows the shade to move up or down in the traditional bouillotte manner. Collectible for both its craftsmanship and decorative appeal, this lamp brings a sense of French sophistication to any interior.
Condition:
The lamp is in fair to good antique condition with signs of age and use throughout. The gilt bronze/heavy brass base retains a warm patina with some surface spotting and light wear, particularly around the dish base. The original hand-painted green tole shade shows rubbing, scratches, and wear consistent with age, and is slightly bent out of shape. The interior of the shade displays typical surface marks. The adjustable arm and arrow element at the top show bending, and the original finial is missing. Wiring in working order, though professional inspection is recommended prior to use.
