Signed Antique French Oil Painting Floral Still Life in Tureen

She arrived with a French railway freight label still stuck to her stretcher, the kind pasted on crates shipped grande vitesse across France, and behind the glassy age-cracked surface is a bouquet that spills the way real cut flowers do. Cream snowball blooms and rust-red wallflowers tumble out of a painted faience tureen, a few petals dropped on the ledge below. The signature in the lower right reads H. Cauchois, the hand of the Rouen flower painter Eugène-Henri Cauchois, and the loose, loaded brushwork matches the manner his signed work is known for. The evidence is strong but not documented to the level of a firm sole-authorship claim, so she is offered as attributed to him, with the reasoning laid out plainly below.
The painting presents well overall, with a fine age craquelure across the surface that is most visible in the darker background at the upper area and is consistent with a canvas of this age. The paint film reads as stable in the photographs, with the loose impasto of the flowers well preserved. From the reverse the canvas appears unlined, on its original keyed stretcher, with age-toning to the linen and some flecking of the original tacking margins. There are a few small paint losses at the extreme edges where the canvas meets the frame rebate. I have not had the surface examined under laboratory conditions, so any past cleaning or localized retouch is not something I can speak to beyond what the photographs show, and I would rather say that plainly than claim more than I can stand behind.
The frame is a period giltwood and composition piece with a foliate outer molding and beaded inner course. It carries scattered losses to the composition ornament along the outer and inner edges and rubbing to the high points of the gilding, all as shown in the photographs. The frame is solid and displays well as an original period surround.

All antique and vintage items are shipped from our warehouse in Bluffdale, Utah. Each piece is carefully packed by hand using archival materials and custom crating when necessary.
Shipping costs are calculated at checkout based on the size and weight of the item. Local pickup is available at the AMD Warehouse.
All sales of antique and vintage items are final due to their unique, one-of-a-kind nature. Illuminé candles and The Collector's Guide may be returned within 14 days of delivery if unopened and in original condition.
If your piece arrives damaged, please photograph the damage immediately (including packaging), contact us within 48 hours at austynmariedesign@gmail.com, and do not discard any packaging.
