Roses carry this one. Cream, white, and butter-yellow blooms crowd a tall blue and white vase, with a single deep magenta rose set high at the center and red carnations threaded between, while sprays of white jasmine spill down toward two fallen petals on the table. The handling is loose and confident, wet into wet, with real impasto built up in the rose heads. It bears a signature at the lower right that I cannot read, and it sits in a foliate giltwood frame with genuine age to it. Late 19th to early 20th century, in the French flower-painting manner.
The painting is stable and presents well. The surface shows craquelure overall and a layer of age grime, and the dark background has deepened with time, which is usual for a work of this period and palette. There is visible impasto in the rose heads that has held well. The signature at the lower right is present but illegible in the paint.
From the reverse, the canvas appears unlined and the stretcher is keyed and hand-assembled, consistent with the estimated date. I have not confirmed lining status in hand beyond what the reverse shows.
The frame is giltwood with foliate and laurel ornament and has genuine age. It carries gesso losses and chips at the corners and along the top rail, with rubbing to the high points of the ornament. It reads as period to the work and is included.
