This remarkable side table, dating from the late 19th century (circa 1870s–1890s), beautifully represents the Victorian Aesthetic Movement’s Anglo-Japanese style, a trend where Western designers embraced Japanese art and culture. Its bamboo-inspired turned legs highlight this cultural fusion, while the intricately carved geometric apron echoes Japanese lattice patterns popular at the time. Featuring a three-tier open design, it offers practical display space for items like books or plants, complemented by delicate curved feet and a scalloped raised edge to keep objects secure. More than just furniture, this piece captures a unique moment when Japanese aesthetics deeply influenced Western design, combining elegance with function.
Condition:
This antique side table is in good condition, displaying the natural signs of age and use that enhance its character. The wood’s rich, warm patina beautifully showcases the detailed carvings and bamboo-inspired legs. While there is some wear on the finish, especially along the edges and top surface, with minor scuffs and scratches typical of over a century of use, these add to its authenticity. The scalloped rim has small areas of wear and a notable chip on one corner (see last two photos), but this does not affect its stability. The tiered shelves remain solid and free from significant warping. Overall, this piece maintains its elegance and charm, reflecting the quality craftsmanship of the late Victorian era.
