A small round tray on three cast feet, the right size for calling cards, letters, or a single glass. A bull is engraved in the center, standing on a wreath inside a lighter oval panel. The rim is gadrooned, and I read it as Old Sheffield plate, mainly from the copper showing along the inner edge of the rim.

Dimensions
1 in. H 8 in. Diameter
Surface
Cleaned, method not established. Plate worn through to copper along the inner rim edge, with scratching to the field.
Primary Material
Silver plate over a copper core (fused plate), assessed as Old Sheffield plate. Non-magnetic.
Period
Antique
Date
Circa 1830
Origin
England, likely Sheffield
Style or Movement
Georgian, gadrooned rim
Also Known As
card salver, waiter
Maker
Attributed to Waterhouse, Hatfield & Co. on the strength of the previous dealer’s tag. The maker’s mark itself is unread.
Marks
Struck to the rim: a device within a square punch, beside a small plain circle. Engraved to the center: a bull standing on a wreath, set within a lighter oval panel.
Construction or Technique
Gadrooned rim, three applied cast feet, engraved bull

Plate wear is visible throughout. A reddish-brown wear line runs along the inner edge of the rim, where the copper core shows through the silver. The field is mottled and finely scratched from age and past cleaning, and the surface has been cleaned at some point, so I would not describe it as original or untouched. The engraved bull in the center is crisp and legible, and the lighter oval around it is brighter than the surrounding field. There are no dents. All three feet are present and secure. The rim stamp is clear but I cannot read the device within it, so the maker attribution rests on the previous dealer’s tag and not on the mark. Please review all photographs closely, as they form part of this description.
