A pointer stands alert over a setter at rest, both modeled in relief and gilded against deep green velvet. What I notice first is how much detail sits in so little depth: the feathering on the setter's ears, the tight curl of foliage underfoot, the pointer's tail swept out behind him. Nothing on the face names a maker, and I'm not going to guess at one.
The relief sits behind glass and was not removed, so the metal and the gilding method have not been tested. It reads as gilt metal. The gilt is bright yellow with a matte textured ground and brighter highlights, and there are orange-red tones in places that may be wear to the gilding or the metal beneath. There is a small raised pit on the setter's haunch that appears to be a casting imperfection. The green velvet is dusty and shows its age.
The frame is worn with age. There is a chip at the lower left outer corner where the dark edge and surface have worn through, smaller chips at the other corners, pale marks along the top rail, and some roughness and flaking along the dark right-hand edge. The gilt inner slip is worn. The glass is clear with no bubbles or waves, and I am not calling it original.
The back is two wooden boards with a split along the joint, held in with square-cut nails. The boards are stained and abraded with age.
