The banner over his head reads "My sheep hear my voice," and the panel at the base still says INSCRIPTION, which tells you what this is: a proposal drawing for a stained glass window, made before anyone had decided on the dedication. Christ stands in a Gothic lancet holding a lamb, against lily quarries and a floral border. A pencil note on the back names a Sussex church and a glass company. I couldn't confirm a window was ever made from it.

Medium
Hand-colored drawing on paper, glass covered
Subject
Christ as the Good Shepherd, holding a lamb and a crook, beneath a banner reading "My sheep hear my voice" (John 10:27). The panel at the base is lettered "INSCRIPTION," a placeholder for a dedication that was never filled in.
Origin
English
Age
Inscribed 1905/6
Inscription
A pencil inscription on the verso reads, in part, "Newick Church Sussex, Design for stained glass window, Whitechapel Glass Co, 1905/6." A second note appears to read "from Whitechapel Glass Co" and is dated Dec 77, and a further pencil line reads "Newick Church, Sussex, Turner." No glass firm by that name has been confirmed, and the notes appear to be later additions rather than documentation from the period.
Board Size
8.25 in. W x 13 in. H
Frame Size
9 in. W x 13.75 in. H
Format
Vertical, with a lancet-shaped (pointed arch) design set within a gold-toned mount
Frame
Gilt frame with a gold-toned mount. The outer edge was originally painted rust red. Hardboard backing with metal turn clips, consistent with a later framing.
Style
Gothic Revival church glass design. The lancet shape, lily quarry background, and floral border follow the conventions of late Victorian and Edwardian church windows.

The drawing is covered by glass and has not been removed from the frame. No toning is visible, and the colors appear bright behind the glass.

The frame has a small chip at the top right corner with loss to the gilt finish, showing the rust red beneath. The outer edge was originally painted that color, and the red shows wear along the sides. The hardboard backing and paper tape show age, with some lifting at the edges. The inscriptions on the verso are in pencil and legible.
