A history of lace built around 120 full-page photographic plates, written by Maria Margaret Pollen, who assembled and catalogued the entire collection herself. First edition, 1908, in the original blue cloth with the lace plate mounted to the front board and gilt lettering to spine and cover. The plates are the reason to own it, large and clean, reproducing needle and bobbin lace from across seven centuries in crisp black and white. The text reflects real scholarship, drawn from her study of illuminated manuscripts and Italian frescoes, and the book remains a recognized reference in the field. This copy carries an armorial bookplate and an ink ownership signature to the front, a nice touch of earlier provenance though the names are not clearly legible. It shows honest wear to the boards but presents as a substantial, handsome volume.
The blue cloth boards are rubbed and show soiling and scuffing across the front, with some loss to the surface around the mounted lace plate. The spine is darkened with wear and fraying at the head and tail. The gilt lettering remains legible. The binding is sound and the text block holds firm. Internally there is foxing to the preliminary leaves, endpapers, and index, consistent with this title and this paper stock, while the 120 photographic plates remain clean and strong on their glossy stock. All plates present. An armorial bookplate and an ink signature appear to the front; neither is clearly legible. A good, honest copy with the appeal in the plates.
