The gilt on this one is what stops you, a full leather binding worked over every edge with a fine tooled roll, raised bands on the spine, and a contrasting title panel lettered Alfred and His Times. Inside, the marbled endpapers and matching marbled edges pull in rust, blue, and ochre, and the gilt dentelles run right around the turn-ins. The text is M. Douglas's popular history of Alfred the Great and the early English world around him, published by Thomas Nelson and Sons in 1900, the year after the thousand-year anniversary of Alfred's death, when England was full of interest in the king. A retailer's stamp for Allman and Son of London sits on the front endpaper. This is a decorative binding first and foremost, the kind of small leather volume that earns its place on a shelf or a stack.

The full leather binding is sound and holds together well, with the gilt tooling still bright across the spine and board borders. There is even soiling and darkening to the red leather on both boards, most visible across the centers, consistent with age and handling. The spine leather is toned. Light rubbing runs along the edges and corners where the gilt roll sits. Internally the text block is clean and the marbled endpapers are fresh, with light age toning and scattered foxing to the title page and a few leaves. The frontispiece and plates are present and clean. A retailer's stamp for Allman and Son, London appears on the front free endpaper. A handsome decorative volume overall, structurally solid and ready to display or shelve.
