A miniature chest of drawers in the Continental manner, three graduated drawers with a working lock to the top drawer, standing on turned bun feet. Small-format pieces like this were made as apprentice showpieces or travelling salesman's samples, scaled-down proofs of a cabinetmaker's hand. The bowed facade and warm figured grain give it real presence for its size, a charming thing for a shelf, a desktop, or a collector's grouping.

Condition

Sold as-is, with photos governing. This is a genuine period piece and shows its age honestly.

The piece has been affected by wood-boring insects. Flight holes are concentrated in the right rear stile, where the tracking is dense, with scattered holes across the drawer sides, drawer bottoms, and backboards. To the best of the seller's knowledge the infestation is old and inactive, and the piece has been treated; it has not been laboratory tested. The affected areas are structurally sound to handling but the damage is extensive enough that a buyer should expect visible worm tracking throughout the secondary wood.

The surface is an old one that has been cleaned and waxed. It is not original untouched patina, but it has not been stripped, blasted, or refinished to bare wood. Expect scratches, small stains, and darkening consistent with age, including some dark marks and a ring to the top.

The drawer fronts have moved with age. The middle drawer front is slightly bowed and cupped across its width and sits marginally proud of the case, and the top drawer front shows some warping as well, so the drawer fronts do not all sit perfectly flush. The drawers open and close.

The primary wood cannot be confirmed from the surface and is assessed as walnut or a fruitwood; it is offered as an assessment, not a certainty. The turned bun feet are consistent with the piece but their originality has not been verified. The brass knobs and escutcheon are old and appear to belong to the piece. The top-drawer lock is present but untested and no key is included. The facade is very slightly bowed. Dimensions are as measured.
