Green transfer decoration in the neoclassical Adam taste rings this oval platter, urns and husk swags and little rosette medallions marching around a clean white ground. It came off the line at Onondaga Pottery in Syracuse, New York, the maker who built a reputation on hotel and restaurant china tough enough to survive a working dining room. The pattern name reads St. Elmo, and the body has the weight and durability that made this ware a fixture on American tables.

Condition

This is a single platter in good used condition. The glaze is intact with no chips or cracks that I can find. There is light brown and tan spotting scattered across the white ground, in the well and around the rim, the kind of age-related staining that comes with a piece this old and does not affect the structure. The green transfer decoration is crisp and reads clearly all the way around the border. The underside carries the maker and pattern marks, with the date code worn to the point that I cannot read the final digit with confidence.
