A small oval frame with a tied ribbon and bow at the crest and a spiraling band crossing the reeded molding, all of it Louis XVI vocabulary borrowed from French furniture a century before this was made. The gilding sits over a red bole ground and has worn through at the high points where hands and dusting reach. It hangs on the wall and does not stand.

oval portrait frame
Maker, Mark, or Attribution

Marks

Construction
Composition ornament pressed in molds and applied to a shaped wood oval, a standard method for decorative frames from the 1890s onward. The crest bow and floral trail read as applied molded elements rather than carved work
Secondary Material
Leather-covered back panel, paper dust seal, plain glass
Hardware or Mounts
Hanging plate at top center, small metal tabs securing the back panel. The easel strut is missing

The frame hangs and does not stand. The easel strut has been lost and the backing is torn where it was attached, leaving an opening roughly an inch and a half long toward the lower center. The paper dust seal is also split and lifting along the upper edge. The hanging plate at top center is present and secure.

The gilding shows rubbing across the high points of the reeded molding, heaviest along the outer curve, where the red bole ground shows through in places. There are minor losses and softening to the raised detail of the crest. A crack runs through the crossed ribbon element on the left side with slight lifting at the edge, which is characteristic of composition ornament as it shrinks and separates with age. It is stable and visible under raking light rather than at a glance.

The aperture holds plain glass in good order with no chips or cracks I can find. Behind the glass I have fitted a piece of white cardstock in place of the original backing paper, which had darkened. The frame is offered empty and ready for a photograph or print.
