Antique English Oak Letter and Ballot Box with Window
Antique English Oak Letter and Ballot Box with Window

A late Victorian to Edwardian English oak box of the kind used by clubs, lodges, and committees, with a form that works equally as a letter box or a ballot box. The detail that gives it away is the pairing you can see here: a slot cut into the hinged lid for dropping in a letter or ballot, and a glazed oval window on the front and the back so the contents stay visible inside. I bought it in England and brought it back by container. It is honest and well used, with a present key and lock that no longer turns, so I am offering it as a decorative piece rather than a working strongbox.
The box is in honest, well-used antique condition and is being sold as a decorative piece, not a working lockbox. The oak has a warm finish with scratches, small dents, and surface marks across the lid and sides consistent with long use. Both oval glass windows are intact. The brass hinges are present and the lid opens and closes properly. The iron key is included but does not currently turn the lock, which appears to have seized over time, so the box should not be relied on to lock. At some point the lock or its fixings were replaced, and the replacement screws have come through the top of the lid and are visible on the outer surface. The interior is a single open compartment showing age, staining, and old tool marks. Structurally the box is sound and sits flat. A patient buyer may be able to free the lock with cleaning and oil, but it is priced and described as decorative only.
