This is an oil on canvas depicting a full arrangement of garden roses and hollyhocks in a blue and white faience urn, set on a stone ledge against a dark ground. The artist is unknown and the work is offered as unsigned. The quality of the rose painting is high, with confident wet-in-wet handling in the blooms and careful drawing in the faience, placing it firmly in the Continental academic still-life tradition of the later nineteenth century. It has been restored during its life, with overpaint to the lower background confirmed under ultraviolet examination, and it carries a small tear to the canvas in the flowerhead area. It is offered as-is, with condition disclosed in full below.

Condition

The painting is in good, honest antique condition for its age and is offered as-is. The canvas shows a fine, stable craquelure throughout, most visible in the background. There is a small tear to the canvas, approximately [1] inch, located in the painted flowerhead area toward the center of the composition. It is visible from the reverse and comes through to the front, where it has caused a small associated break in the paint surface. The tear is stable but presents on the face of the painting; it has not been repaired and is offered as-is, and it would respond well to routine professional conservation (tear mend and inpainting) should the buyer wish. Separately, ultraviolet examination shows an area of later overpaint in the lower background, in the region where an artist's signature would typically sit; what lies beneath cannot be confirmed without conservation, and the work is offered as unsigned. The color in the flowers remains rich and the surface is otherwise sound. The period giltwood frame is water gilt over red bole, with scattered losses to the gesso and gilding at the corners and edges consistent with age; it appears original or very early to the painting. The piece has not been examined by a conservator out of frame.
