She is painted half-length against a dark ground, hair parted dead center and smoothed down over the ears, the way a great many women wore it in the 1840s and 1850s. A tan silk bow sits at the bodice of an off-the-shoulder gown trimmed in lace, which the artist has built up in thick, raised paint. The sitter is unidentified and the painting is unsigned, which is usual for portraits of this kind. The ornate gilt frame gives it real presence on a wall.

Antique condition consistent with age. The paint surface carries a heavy, glossy varnish with broad craquelure across the face, background and dress. The face is stable and reads well. There is flaking and small losses in the raised lace trim and white highlights at the neckline. The dark gown shows linear scratches and scuffs, and a few faint diagonal lines in the lower right that may be stretcher marks or old creases. I have not treated or retouched anything, and there may be earlier restoration under the varnish that I can't rule out.

The canvas has been re-supported on a stretcher later than the painting, and the reverse is clean and even. The painting was not relined. Because of that, any original labels or stamps on the back are not present. The one mark is an inked number on a stretcher bar. The reverse has a hardboard backing held with staples and a modern metal spring clip.

The frame is gilt composition with a few open corner joints and general wear to the gilding. It has not been confirmed as original to the painting. Please review all photographs closely, as they form part of this description.
