The vellum spine is the reason to own this book. The standard Oxford Edition of Tennyson came out in red cloth and, for buyers who wanted something finer, in this half-vellum binding with vellum corners and rose-pink cloth boards: the same text, dressed for a proper library. The gilt-tooled spine carries an Art Nouveau design centered on a circular title label, and the frontispiece is a photogravure of the famous G.F. Watts portrait of Tennyson, from the painting held by Lady Henry Somerset. Watts was the pre-eminent Victorian portrait painter, and his Tennyson is one of the great literary portraits of the era. Inside is the complete poems, spanning the early lyrics through In Memoriam, Maud, The Princess, Idylls of the King, and Enoch Arden, with T. Herbert Warren's scholarly introduction dedicated to the Master of Trinity College, Cambridge, where Tennyson and his beloved friend Arthur Hallam both studied.
The vellum spine shows age-appropriate darkening and handling marks, more pronounced at the head and tail; the gilt tooling is present throughout but softened in areas with some wear to the decoration. The circular title label is intact with some surface wear and darkening to the leather. The rose-pink cloth boards are faded and show surface wear lines and light soiling, as expected for a book of this age and binding type; the vellum corners are sound but show soiling and light rubbing. The top edge of the text block is plain (ungilt on this copy) and shows moderate tanning and light dust accumulation. The pages have tanned to a warm cream throughout, consistent with paper of this period; the text is fully legible and clean with no foxing visible. No inscriptions or bookplates noted. The binding appears structurally sound with hinges intact.
