A mahogany box in the full sarcophagus shape, with canted shoulders, bun feet and a pair of grape-basket ring handles at the ends. Boxes of this form were commonly made in the Regency years for tea, sewing and keepsakes. This one is lined in green patterned fabric and sits well on a desk, a console or a coffee table.

7 in. H 12 in. W 8.5 in. D
How to Style It
Keep it on a library desk for stationery, or on an entry console for keys and mail. It also reads well on a coffee table stacked with books.

Circa 1830

England

Maker, Mark, or Attribution
Unattributed. Retailer’s plate to the underside.
Marks
Brass plate screwed to the underside, reading “Handleys Ltd, Drapers & House Furnishers, Southsea”
Construction or Technique
Veneered body with a canted, sloped lid and turned bun feet
Secondary Material
Pale stringing and edge banding, pale diamond-shaped escutcheon surround, green patterned fabric lining
Hardware or Mounts
Cast gilt-metal ring handles to each end, each a basket of grapes, and brass hinges

The lock is broken and the box cannot be locked. There is no key. The interior is unfitted, with no tea canisters or mixing bowl. The green fabric lining is fraying along the edges and seams, with loose threads, and there is reddish-brown staining to the lining at the base of the interior. The back right bun foot has been repaired and glued back on. There is a small loss to the pale edge banding along the top edge of the lid beside one handle, and there are scratches to the lid. The remaining feet show wear. The underside carries a green covering with losses that expose bare wood in several patches, and the retailer’s plate is fixed over it. I have not claimed the lining, handles, hinges or lock as original to the box, and I have not established the surface. The lid stays open on its own. Please review all photographs closely, as they form part of this description.
