This is one of those pieces that immediately pulls you into another time. Likely made in England or Scotland around the late 1800s, this double inkwell base was designed with a clear nod to the gentleman’s desk - equal parts function and flourish. The inkwells themselves are missing, but the presence is still there. It’s bold, a little wild, and undeniably elegant.
The base features two curved steer horns, capped in silver-plated lids, joined by a center platform that includes a small velvet-lined compartment—probably for pounce or sealing wax back in the day. The curved form and natural material reflect a broader 19th-century fascination with the pastoral and the handmade. These weren’t just office supplies. They were statements.
What makes this interesting is the blend of organic and refined. Horn, used often in sporting items or hunting lodge accessories, gave it that rustic edge. But the silver-plated mounts elevate it—it’s a piece meant to impress. You’d expect to see something like this in the study of a well-read landowner or maybe someone who fancied themselves a bit of an explorer.
Condition:
Excellent antique condition with expected patina and light wear to the silver plate. The inkwell is missing, hinges are functional and secure. Silver plating is showing minor age-related wear, consistent with its age and use.
