The base of this biscuit barrel is stamped Harrison, Norfolk Works, Sheffield, 1881, the mark of John Harrison and Company, the first firm in Sheffield to take up electroplating back in 1843. The body is covered in fine hand engraving, fern-like sprays and framed roundels, wrapped in beaded borders, and it sits on its own footed underplate with a cast floral finial on the domed lid. A genuine late Victorian English piece with a maker you can actually trace.

Condition

This biscuit barrel is in good antique condition with bright, clean plating and strong reflective shine across the body. The hand engraving is crisp and the beaded borders are intact. The one issue to know about is the lid. The original hinge is missing entirely, so the lid is now a separate lift off cover rather than a hinged one. It sits flush and flat on top of the body and looks correct in place, but it is not attached and does not swing open on a hinge. The soldering where the hinge once joined has come apart. Aside from the missing hinge, the piece shows only light surface scratching and handling marks consistent with age and normal use. The underplate and finial are both in good shape.
