A pierced silverplate salt cellar in the English Neoclassical Revival manner, oval boat form on a spreading pedestal foot with two scroll handles and a fitted cobalt blue glass liner. This form descends directly from the Adam-style silverwork of the late 18th century and was produced continuously in electroplate through the Victorian and Edwardian periods. The cobalt blue liner is not decorative — it is the practical solution to a real problem: salt corrodes silver, so the glass protected the metal while the pierced body let the blue show through. The result is one of those pieces that is more visually striking than its modest origins might suggest.
