A matched pair of candlesticks with gilt vines painted around heavy black bases and brass stems twisted into a spiral. They suit a mantel, a console, or the middle of a dining table. The stems carry an engraved fret pattern that holds dark in the recesses, and it’s the detail I keep turning them to look at.

Dimensions
9.5 in. H 4.25 in. Dia., each, matched pair
Candle Socket
1 in. diameter
Surface
Black lacquer-type finish with painted gilt decoration, composition of finish not established. Sheen worn from the upper surfaces of the bases. Areas of varnish differ between the two candlesticks, applied at a date not established
Primary Material
Brass socket and drip pan. Bases of heavy grey non-magnetic metal under a black finish, composition not established
Period
Antique
Date
Late 19th century
Origin
England
Style or Movement
Victorian
Marks
Struck to the underside of each base: “C&T” above a diamond-shaped device with a rounded top containing the Roman numeral IV, characters within the diamond read as 13, a central character, and the letter B at the bottom, with the number 5209 beside it
Construction or Technique
Spiral twist stem engraved with an interlaced geometric fret pattern with dark infill, rope-twist rim and collar to the base, milled edge to the drip pan, stem secured through the base by a threaded stud and square nut
Secondary Material
Magnetic stem, assessed as a brass-finished ferrous metal, with a magnetic square nut

Old wax residue remains inside both sockets and has not been cleaned out. The black finish has lost its sheen across the upper surfaces of the bases and shows fine crackle in places and a few small chips. The gilt vine decoration is intact but worn along the raised edges and rims. The drip pans show light surface scratching and tarnish. The undersides are unfinished grey metal with light scratching, spotting, and small deposits. The two candlesticks are matched but differ in areas of varnish, so they will not look identical in every light. The stems are magnetic, so they are not solid brass. The sockets and drip pans are non-magnetic and assessed as brass. I have not verified that the sockets, stems, and bases are original to one another.
