This is a quiet, half-length portrait of a young woman painted in oil on canvas, almost certainly Continental European in origin and dating to the 1840s. She is shown against a soft dark ground, her auburn hair parted at the center and falling in side ringlets that just reveal the ears, a style specific to the late 1830s through the 1840s. She wears an off-the-shoulder evening gown in pale blue-grey silk with a ruched bertha at the neckline, and at her throat a substantial multi-strand gold filigree collar with a central pendant drop. I acquired the painting in England, in its original birds-eye maple frame.
The painting is in honest, age-appropriate condition with several specific issues to note. There is a small area of paint loss on the sitter's cheek that is visible at close range. Pronounced age craquelure runs across the entire painted surface, evenly distributed, consistent with a mid-19th century oil on canvas that has not been relined. The varnish has yellowed with age and the palette would likely brighten with sensitive cleaning by a conservator, though I am presenting the painting as it currently sits. The canvas is unlined and the original stretcher with corner keys remains in place. The birds-eye maple frame is solid and stable, with light surface wear consistent with age and no visible losses. Original hanging hardware is present on the upper strainer.
