Three volumes of William Cowper's collected poems in the Sharpe Cabinet Edition of 1825, printed by C. and C. Whittingham at Chiswick. The set comprises The Task, Table Talk and Other Poems, and Minor Poems in their original full tan calf, each volume blind-stamped on the boards with a rococo cartouche and fitted with a richly gilt spine in a repeating foliate pattern. Each volume carries an engraved frontispiece drawn by Richard Westall R.A. and engraved by Charles Rolls. The marbled edges in pink and blue show across all three volumes when stacked, which is most of why you'd want this set on a shelf. Period inscriptions dated March 19, 1836 appear in each volume, placing the set in a reader's hands within eleven years of printing.

Condition

The bindings are generally sound across all three volumes. Boards are firm and the covers retain good color throughout. The gilt spine tooling remains clear and well-defined on all three. Vol. 2 (Table Talk) has a crack and associated leather loss at the foot of the spine along the lower joint — this is the set's primary condition issue and is visible. The other two volumes show normal age-appropriate wear at spine ends and corners. Marbled edges are intact and bright. The text blocks are clean throughout with expected light foxing to the frontispiece pages in each volume, consistent with the steel-engraved plates. The period 1836 inscriptions are in brown ink; the 1944 "E. Roberts" ownership inscription is in blue ink and appears in multiple volumes.
