A small English cottage scene painted in 1889, signed at the lower right with the initials E.Y. and bearing a date that places the work right in the heart of the late Victorian period. The verso tells the full story. The canvas is stamped Winsor & Newton, London, the original London-supplied artist's canvas, and the frame carries two intact paper labels from Rowlands of Manchester at 57 Lower Mosley Street, with a second branch at 5 Stamford Street, Altrincham. The painting and frame have traveled together since the year they were made, which is rare for a small English oil of this age. The subject is a red brick cottage with white-trimmed windows, a wrought iron gate opening onto a curving path, a flowering border at right, and a leafy tree at left, painted in the direct naive idiom of a working provincial English hand.

Condition

The painting is in good antique condition with honest age-appropriate wear. The canvas is on its original stretcher and has not been relined, with the original Winsor & Newton London stamp intact on the verso. The painted surface is sound across the composition with no flaking or active issues. There is a small area of wear in the lower right corner where the paint has thinned with age, exposing the canvas weave in places. Scattered light surface specks are present across the painting, consistent with age and the natural settling of a Victorian oil under its original varnish. The varnish has yellowed slightly with time, which warms the palette but does not obscure the composition. The frame is the original Rowlands of Manchester gilt gesso frame and shows a few small losses to the carved ornament and general wear to the gilding with the gesso visible in places. There is some spacing between the canvas and the frame where the canvas has shifted within the rebate over time, which can be addressed by a framer if a buyer prefers a tighter fit. Both Rowlands paper labels are present on the verso, with the upper label torn along one edge and the lower label intact and fully legible.
