A small English dome-top trunk made by I.K. Powell, Saddle, Trunk and Harness Maker, of Barnard Castle in County Durham. Two of Powell's original printed trade labels survive inside, one on the back interior wall and another on the inside of the lid, identifying the maker and town with the kind of documentary clarity that almost never survives on a trunk of this age. The pine carcass is covered in tawny hair-on hide with strong natural color variation, edged in leather banding studded with brass dome nails, and reinforced at the corners and lid joints with forged iron strapping. A pressed brass foliate escutcheon centers the front. The interior is papered in blue with applied gilt sawtooth paper trim along the seams, and the inside of the lid retains fragments of a decorative pictorial print that originally adorned the underside.

Condition

The trunk is in honest, used antique condition with wear consistent with nearly two centuries of age. The hair-on hide cover is largely intact across the lid and front, with thinning and minor losses to the hair in spots. The back panel shows heavier hair loss with the bare leather substrate visible, consistent with long storage against a wall. The leather edge banding shows wear and small losses at the corners. The brass studs are all present along the main decorative borders. The iron corner strapping and lid strap are intact and stable. The pressed brass escutcheon is in place at the front. The original brass and iron swing handle on the lid is present and secure.

The lock is present but no key accompanies the trunk; the lock has not been tested. The original side carrying handles are missing, though the iron staples that held them are still in place on both ends.

Inside, the blue paper lining survives across the lid and base with applied gilt sawtooth paper trim along the seams, fastened with small brass-headed pins. The floor of the interior shows water staining and discoloration consistent with long use and storage. The decorative pictorial print on the inside of the lid is largely torn and lost, with only fragments remaining. Both original I.K. Powell trade labels are present — one on the inside of the lid is torn with losses to the printed area, while the label on the back interior wall is mostly intact and clearly readable.

The exposed pine on the underside of the trunk shows the original hand-planed surface and hand-cut nail construction. The bottom hide and paper covering shows wear and losses. The case structure is sound and the lid opens and closes properly on its original hinges.
