A book rest for reading at a table or desk, the sloped oak top rising from a low turned base with a narrow lip along the bottom edge to hold a book open. What makes this one worth a look is the base. Most reading slopes sit on plain feet or a solid plinth, but this one stands on fully turned baluster legs joined by turned box stretchers, so it reads like a small piece of furniture rather than a simple stand. The quarter-sawn top shows strong ray fleck through the grain.

Condition

The book rest is in good vintage condition with honest wear consistent with age and use. The sloped oak top shows scattered ring marks, small dark stains, surface scratches, and a few shallow losses along the edges, most visible under raking light. The grain is open in places from long use. The turned legs, stretchers, and feet are all present and solid, with light wear to the turnings and minor old chips at the block corners where the stretchers join. The pegged joints are tight and the piece stands firm and does not rack. The lip along the bottom edge of the top is intact. No marks, labels, or stamps are present anywhere on the piece.
