A tiered terracotta fountain fills the center of a walled courtyard, its basin spilling trailing flowers, with two cypress standing behind and a loggia opening onto a sliver of sea. The brushwork is thick and loose, with warm stucco set against deep green shadow. The painter signed the front, and the back carries a second landscape, so this panel holds two pictures. I have not been able to identify the artist, and I would rather say that plainly than guess.

Artist
Unidentified
Signature
Signed in dark paint at the lower left of the courtyard side, reading an initial followed by what reads as Mondaine or Mondeine, with a short second word I cannot read. The reverse landscape carries a separate inscription in black along the top edge, reading G Mondine or similar, in a different hand from the front signature. I cannot confirm that the two are by the same person.
Medium
Oil on panel
Subject
Mediterranean courtyard garden with a tiered terracotta fountain, cypress trees, and a loggia with painted roundels. The reverse carries a hillside landscape with a large tree, a distant tower, and sea beyond.
Origin
Continental European, unattributed
Age
Early 20th century. Undated, assessed on style and surface wear, and the date cannot be narrowed further without a dated inscription or label.
Panel Size
13 in. W x 18 in. H
Format
Rectangular, painted on both sides
Frame
Unframed
Support
Thin wood panel, with vertical grain checks visible through the paint and no labels or markings on the edges

Antique condition consistent with age. The courtyard side shows scraping and wear along the edges and corners, most noticeable along the bottom edge. Fine vertical grain checks run through the paint where the wood has moved over time. The reverse landscape shows the same edge wear, with rubbing across the sky and losses along the top edge where a reddish layer shows beneath the blue-grey ground. No material is missing from the panel. It is unframed, so the edges are exposed and should be handled with care.
