The hare is the smallest thing in the picture and the reason for all of it. A rider in a scarlet coat gallops a chestnut horse across open country while a black greyhound and a fawn one close on the hare ahead, with spectators gathered by a cottage at the left. It is a Stevengraph, woven in silk, and the printed mount carries the Thomas Stevens imprint of Coventry and London along with the title, The First Point.

Maker
Bearing the imprint of Thomas Stevens, Inventor and Manufacturer, Coventry and London (Registered)
Title
The First Point, as printed on the mount
Medium
Woven silk, laid into a printed paper mount
Type of Work
Stevengraph. A picture woven in colored silk on a Jacquard loom in Coventry, a form Thomas Stevens popularized from the 1860s. They were sold as souvenirs and gifts, and sporting subjects like this one were among the most popular.
Subject
Hare coursing scene with a mounted huntsman and two greyhounds
Origin
England
Age
Late 19th century
Frame Size
8.5 in. W x 5.75 in. H
Frame
Black frame with a beaded inner moulding, glazed, brown paper backing with a cord hanger
Notes
The mount carries a blind-embossed mark in the upper right corner. Dated on the Stevens imprint, which places the maker's work from the 1860s into the early 20th century. The frame and backing have not been confirmed as contemporary with the silk.

Antique condition consistent with age. The printed paper mount is toned overall, with foxing and some staining across its surface. The woven silk is sound and the colors remain clear, with darker toning along the upper edge of the sky. There is one tiny loose area of silk on the main horse, small and stable in the photographs. The glass appears to be period and is in place.

The brown paper backing has a small split along the top edge, and the cord hanger is intact. The frame is sound in the photographs and sits well around the mount. Please review all photographs closely, as they form part of this description.
