“14th Bridge, Srinagar” – Signed 1925 Watercolor by Scottish Artist Ewan Geddes (RSW)

Artist: Ewan Geddes (RSW), dated 1925

A peaceful and painterly slice of Edwardian-era travel, this signed 1925 watercolor by Scottish artist Ewan Geddes (RSW) captures the 14th Bridge in Srinagar, one of the most historic crossings over the Jhelum River in Kashmir. The artist’s delicate use of line and layered washes is typical of his work, showing clear influence from both the Royal Scottish Academy and the broader British watercolor tradition. Known for his atmospheric landscapes and rural scenes, Geddes painted primarily in Scotland, but this rare example reflects the period’s artistic fascination with colonial travel and the East.

The scene features traditional Kashmiri shikaras in the foreground, with distant boatmen and terracotta-toned architecture set against a misty, blue mountain backdrop. It’s signed and dated clearly in two places: “E. Geddes / 1925” lower left and titled “14th Bridge, Srinagar” lower right. The painting is housed in its original golden frame with a warm, slightly timeworn mount, frankly, it adds to the charm. On the reverse, a label from T. Marrod, a picture dealer in Northumberland, gives us a clue to its provenance, alongside the name “Matthews” written in ink, likely a previous owner.

Condition:

The watercolor is in overall very good antique condition. There is some light spotting visible behind the glass, likely foxing or age-related toning, mostly in the mount, with only minor effects near the sky portion of the painting itself. These are consistent with a watercolor of this age and medium and do not detract from the scene when viewed as a whole. The colors remain soft but vivid, and there is no water damage or fading. The original frame shows typical signs of wear, including light scuffs and corner rubbing. The paper backing is torn, but the artwork remains secure and professionally presented under glass with original hanging wire intact.
