At almost nine inches across and under two inches tall, this is a wide, shallow serving bowl from Sarreguemines, the long-running faience house in the Lorraine region of France. The pattern is called Nobilis, a green laurel garland that chains around the rim in two rows above a fine scrolled border. The center is left plain white, which is what makes it work as easily on a wall or a shelf as on a table. The green-on-cream color is the whole appeal here, and the pattern is crisp all the way around.
The bowl is structurally sound with no chips, cracks, or hairlines found. The condition story is the surface. There is heavy allover crazing across the entire glaze, inside and out, a fine network of lines covering the whole piece. The crazing has picked up light staining in places, giving parts of the white a faint tan cast rather than a bright white, most noticeable along the outer rim and in scattered spots in the well. There are a few small dark specks in the center of the bowl. The green laurel border is strong and complete all the way around with no losses to the print. The foot rim and underside are clean and the backstamp is crisp. Please run a fingernail around the rim edge in raking light before it ships to catch anything a photo cannot show. This is honest age-appropriate wear for a French earthenware piece of this age and does not affect the bowl's use or display.
