A striking example of late 19th-century French craftsmanship, this parcel-gilt bronze figure of a Renaissance halberdier—styled after the flamboyant Landsknechts of the 16th century—stands proudly atop a turned white marble plinth. Cast in rich gunmetal-toned bronze with dramatic fire-gilt highlights, the figure captures the bravado and ornate detail typical of the Renaissance Revival period that flourished in Paris during the Second Empire and Belle Époque. The figure likely originated as part of a garniture set flanking a mantel clock, a fashionable decorative ensemble for the bourgeois interiors of Haussmann-era France. Today, it stands beautifully as a sculptural accent on its own, elevated by its original serpentine giltwood base with beaded detailing and bun feet. Elegant in scale and rich in historic character, this piece makes a sophisticated addition to a desk, library shelf, or vignette with old-world charm.
Condition:
The bronze figure retains its original dark patina with brilliant parcel-gilt detailing, showing only minor age-appropriate wear. The white marble plinth is in very good antique condition with faint surface marks and a few scattered spots consistent with age. The ornate giltwood base remains structurally sound and visually impressive, though it shows signs of wear to the gilding and some light chipping along the edge, particularly on one corner. No restorations are visible, and the piece displays beautifully overall with a desirable untouched surface that reflects its authentic 19th-century origin.
