Early 20th Century
This antique oil painting captures a moment drawn from Greek mythology: Thetis, mother of Achilles, rising from the sea to deliver her son’s divine armor. It’s a timeless subject, and here it’s interpreted through the lens of academic training, rich in symbolism, executed with classical restraint, and full of painterly grace.
The canvas shows Thetis holding a sword and red-plumed helmet, while two winged cherubs (putti) bear a gleaming shield across the waves. The color palette leans warm and muted, with subtle glows in the skin tones and sky that nod to 19th-century European painting traditions. The lower right is inscribed “Sketch — Thetis,” suggesting this may have been a preparatory work for a larger piece or a study done during formal training.
Signed G. M. Hingey, this piece is believed to have been painted by a Utah-based artist, possibly a student sent abroad by private patrons The reverse bears a partial label from Parkinson’s Art Studio in Ogden, a well-known framing and art instruction studio that further supports its Utah origin.
Condition:
Oil on canvas, laid down on board. The painting shows honest age: wear to the upper corners, chipping along the lower edge, and some surface grime throughout. There’s light craquelure in places, particularly the sky, but the paint layer remains stable and luminous. No punctures or repairs are visible. Sold unframed, as originally mounted. The back retains a partially intact Parkinson’s Art Studio label from Ogden, Utah.
