A coopered oak biscuit barrel from Edwardian England, the body built up of carved staves with turned beaded bands top and bottom and a silver plated rim, swing handle, and lift-off lid with a turned finial. A shield-form silver plated cartouche to the front sits ready for a monogram and was never engraved, which is the small detail that tells you this barrel stayed with its original owner and was never given as the presentation gift it was made to be. The lid carries four pseudo-hallmarks and an EPNS stamp, confirming English silverplate. The original glazed ceramic liner is intact.

Condition

The barrel is in good antique condition with honest age-appropriate wear. The coopered oak body is structurally sound, with the staves, beaded bands, and carved arcade panels all intact and no losses to the beading. There is a visible gap on the left front of the body where the wood has shrunk slightly between two staves over time, which is normal movement in coopered oak of this age and is not a crack or structural issue. The silver plated rim, swing handle, lift-off lid, and finial are all in place and functional, with light surface wear and minor scratches to the plate consistent with use. The shield-form silver plated cartouche on the front is blank and was never engraved. The original glazed ceramic liner is present and intact, with no chips or cracks visible. The handle swings freely.
