c. Early 20th Century

This peaceful mountain landscape was painted in watercolor by Irish-American artist Edith Bethune Maguire, likely in the early 20th century. The soft autumn tones, layered trees, and gentle brushwork capture that fleeting moment when the seasons begin to shift, when the greens haven’t quite given way to gold, but you know they will soon. The painting feels quiet and honest, much like Maguire’s broader body of work.

Born in County Tipperary, Ireland, in 1861, Maguire immigrated to the United States in the 1890s and lived in Salt Lake City, Utah, before eventually settling in California. She was part of a small but talented group of early Western watercolorists, and her work often focused on the landscapes around her; forests, valleys, coastal views, usually painted en plein air. Though not widely known today, her pieces are rarely found and increasingly collected, especially among those with ties to the Utah or California art scenes.

Condition:
The watercolor itself is in good condition with no foxing, moisture damage, or fading visible under the glass. The paper shows gentle age toning, but no creases or stains. The frame has surface wear consistent with age, minor edge wear and small scuffs, mostly visible on close inspection, but remains sturdy and well-presenting. The backing appears professionally sealed.
